British Millerain has been at the forefront of textile manufacturing for over a century. Founded in 1880 in Halifax, Yorkshire, this family-owned business has become the global leader in waxed cotton and specialist textiles for outerwear.
The origin of waxed cloth
Documented as far back as the 15th century, British Sailors treated their flax canvas sailcloth with linseed oil. This prevented the sailcloth from becoming soaked, keeping it light and efficient at sea. The rising demand for lighter and more efficient sails, led to the cotton sail cloth’s evolution from being a heavy duty flax, to being made from finer yarns and a two- fold construction. This also made the fabric more appropriate for outerwear.
The business
British Millerain’s journey began in 1880, when a small group of workers and academics, led by John Miller, the elder, and John Miller, the younger, established the first factory in Halifax. The company quickly gained a reputation for its innovative approach to textile finishing, obtaining global patents for its unique processes. The company pioneered the development of paraffin-based waxed cotton, which offered improved weather resistance and breathability compared to linseed oil. This innovation set the standard for waxed cotton as we know it today.
In 1894, British Millerain introduced the first patented Millerain® rainproof finish, revolutionizing the textile industry. This innovation laid the foundation for the development of waxed cotton, a fabric that would become a staple in outerwear collections worldwide. Over the years, British Millerain continued to refine and expand its product offerings, earning a reputation as the leading manufacturer of waxed cotton and practical, aesthetic fabrics for outdoor applications.
Commitment to Quality and Craftsmanship
The company’s dedication to innovation is also reflected in its diverse range of technical performance fabrics. From traditional wax coatings to modern lamination and dry water-resistant finishes, British Millerain offers a wide array of textiles designed to meet the needs of various industries. This versatility has made British Millerain a trusted partner for many leading brands in the fashion and outdoor sectors.
A Family-Owned Legacy
British Millerain has remained a family-owned business, with the Miller family continuing to play a central role in its operations. The current chairman, Mr. Michael Miller, represents the sixth generation of the family to lead the company. This continuity has allowed British Millerain to stay true to its core values while embracing new technologies and market opportunities.
The unique appeal of waxed cotton
The unique properties of waxed cotton make it an ideal choice for outerwear. It provides excellent protection against rain and wind while remaining breathable and comfortable. Over time, waxed cotton develops a distinctive patina, adding to its charm and appeal. This combination of functionality and style has made waxed cotton a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts and fashion aficionados.
British Millerain’s legacy of innovation, quality, and craftsmanship has made it a leader in the textile industry. Innovations like the machine washable (30°C) TekWax® ensure the business’ continuity. With a history of over a century, the company continues to set the standard for waxed cotton and technical performance fabrics.
It counts Norse Projects, ThruDark, TNF, and Brooks Brothers among its current and former customers.
